What to expect in your acupuncture session

Acupuncture is a 3,000-year-old system that can treat and prevent illness. It’s the main component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). All beings have life energy called qi (pronounced “chee”). This energy flows throughout the body along specific pathways called meridians. When the flow of energy is blocked, we experience pain, sickness, and other imbalances. Acupuncture restores harmony to the body through the insertion of fine needles at specific points chosen in accordance with each patient's individual needs and Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis.

An acupuncture session typically involves several steps, and the experience can vary slightly depending on the practitioner and your individual needs. Here’s a general idea of what you might expect:

Initial Consultation: Your session will usually start with a discussion about your health history, current symptoms, and any concerns you may have. The acupuncturist may ask detailed questions about your lifestyle, diet, and overall well-being to understand your condition better.

Diagnosis: The acupuncturist may perform a physical examination, which could include checking your pulse, examining your tongue, and palpating specific areas of your body to assess your condition.

Needle Insertion: Once the acupuncturist has a clear understanding of your needs, they will insert thin, sterile needles into specific points on your body. These points are located along what are known as meridians or energy pathways. The needles are usually very fine and may cause minimal discomfort or a slight tingling sensation.

Needle Retention: The needles are left in place for a period of time, usually between 15 to 30 minutes. During this time, you’ll likely be asked to relax in a comfortable position. Many people find this part of the session to be quite calming.

Post-Treatment: After removing the needles, the acupuncturist may offer advice on lifestyle changes, exercises, or dietary adjustments that could complement the treatment.

Follow-Up: Depending on your condition, you might need multiple sessions. Your acupuncturist will discuss a treatment plan with you and schedule follow-up appointments as necessary.

Overall, the experience is generally relaxing and can be a good opportunity to unwind. If you have any specific concerns or questions about the session, it's a good idea to discuss them with your acupuncturist beforehand.
